This website has a bunch of tips, videos, and scripts that can help in rigging. I found a YouTube video from him that explains how to get really simple GUI rig tools which you can find here.
To save time here is the folder needed for creating the GUI tools. Just open up the document and follow the instructions. I have tested this on both my computer with Maya 2014 and the campus computers. There is a slight problem when using it with the campus computer, but that might just be because I don't fully understand everything.
